Published at: 12 October 2017

Considering that most people living in urban areas spend about 90% of their time indoors, how often does the person on the street consider the resource demands and macro impact our ubiquitous environment affects?

The United Nations Environment Programme estimates that buildings account for 50% of the world’s energy expenditures and 40% of greenhouse gas emissions. And, apart from producing over 20% of all solid waste generated, it also gobbles up at least 25% of earth’s potable water. But, it’s not just the finished building that impacts, building construction consumes large amounts of materials and produces tons of waste - highlighting the importance of sustainable architecture’s role in creating healthy built environments.
