Entries open for 2017/2018 AfriSam-SAIA Award for Sustainable Architecture + Innovation

Published at: 13 October 2017

Online entries for the 2017/2018 AfriSam-SAIA Award for Sustainable Architecture + Innovation are now open.

This biennial award is South Africa’s leading platform dedicated to acknowledging best practice, innovation and sustainability in architecture and the built environment. It aims to promote and increase cross disciplinary learning and understanding in the field of sustainability and sustainable practice.

Increasingly climate and social challenges are necessitating new solutions to persistent developmental challenges in human living environments. We can only address these challenges through sustainable integrated approaches to communities, planning, design, architecture, building practice, natural systems and technology.

“We have entered a new era in which sustainable design is becoming a non-negotiable, integral part of the building industry” - said Kevin Bingham, 2016/2017 Awards Convenor.

Therefore the four categories of the AfriSam-SAIA Award for Sustainable Architecture + Innovation, Sustainable Architecture, Research in Sustainability, Sustainable Products and Technology and Sustainable Social Programmes, were designed to foster dialogue and encourage interdisciplinary learnings that will result in a more holistic practice - to the benefit of our communities, our environment and our collective destiny.

The Award’s four overarching criteria: Harmonisation, People Upliftment, Place Making Performance and Evolutionary Paradigm, frames the adjudication process. Apart from being evaluated for their uncompromising and critical engagement with these criteria, eligible entries in the Sustainable Architecture category are also visited for in loco inspections to ensure that awarded entries do indeed add value to our built environment and the lives of people.

The 2016/2017 AfriSam-SAIA Award for Sustainable Architecture + Innovation saw a record number of entries, of which twenty-two were selected for adjudication - of these, seven were awarded and another four commended. This final short list is testament to the rigorous interrogation that one expects from South Africa’s premier platform for recognising excellence in sustainable practice and innovation.

“Successful projects not only respond to these criteria but also use the criteria as design generating tools. Unsuccessful projects make tokenistic gestures to sustainability without demonstrating the understanding that the criteria of sustainability are as important as user function and aesthetic beauty. The building must have a clear function and be in use” - says Richard Stretton, member of the 2016/2017 adjudication team.
