The Wilds - revitalising a forgotten public space

Johannesburg, Gauteng

Map

Starting with his own efforts to cut through the undergrowth, James Delaney began to revitalise a forgotten 40-acre public space. This was followed by the addition of metal sculptures and with the help of volunteers, The Wilds has become a restorative space for residents of the inner city and suburbs.

Harmonisation

This is a project that illustrates the power of the individual to make a sustainable difference. It starts off with one person’s dream resulting in a space that is one with humans and nature.

People Upliftment

  • Artistic application inspiring the energy of other individuals: The role of the creative in sustainability.
  • Active motivation in local government to support and fund the upkeep of the park.

Evolutionary Paradigm
  • This project is an example of leadership in the way that the artist influenced the City of Joburg Parks and other community members to take care of The Wilds park by being the first to do it.
  • A ‘bottom-up’ approach to facilitating the involvement of local government.
Placemaking Performance
Setting a precedent to demonstrate the sustainability of a project that tests the creative implementation of the project.
