Architecture for a Change

Northcliff House

Johannesburg, Gauteng

Map

Structured out of two shipping containers and lightweight framing steel, the Northcliff House was built without disturbing the natural landscape and man-made features of the area.

Harmonisation

Using shipping containers as a building material in addition to using it to transport materials is commended resource-efficiency

People Upliftment

Although the project addresses the unique need of the homeowner, there is no sufficient evidence that it broadens the skills of those who were involved during the construction.

Evolutionary Paradigm

  • The use of the shipping container as a kit-of-parts which is used both as a means of transporting materials and as a habitable object that is used as part of the construction is a novel approach to the construction sector.
  • Innovative technical ability translated to the residential building typology.
