44 on Grand Central

Midrand, Johannesburg

When the Gautrain needed new headquarters in Midrand they turned to TC Design Architects who created a series of 'telescopic boxes' which have unobstructed views of the railway line. Four floors of office space are linked together through a central atrium which encourages social interaction. Natural resources are captured by harvesting rainwater for irrigation and sanitation, while the natural solar cycle was considered for building orientation. In the entire design process emphasis was given on merging the building with the environment between all its various components – energy, buildings, transport, ecosystems, people, water, waste and more.
